Product Overview

Polyurethane sponge media is a porous, hydrophilic biological carrier made from polyurethane (PU) foam. The open, interconnected pore structure gives a very large surface area for biofilm while allowing free water and air flow, so it supports fast film formation and a high biomass concentration. It is supplied in two types — hydrophilic white and black — and in 2 cm and 3 cm cubes (custom sizes available).

Key Features

  1. Hydrophilic surface for rapid microbial attachment and strong biofilm.
  2. Controllable PPI pores — a tunable pore density (10–60 PPI) that raises surface area and aids initial immobilization of biomass.
  3. Open, interconnected porosity (≥95%) for easy water and air passage with low blockage.
  4. Large surface area (≥4000 m²/m³) and high biological retention.
  5. Light and compressible, easy to place and regenerate, reducing operating cost.
  6. Durable — long service life and good chemical stability.

PPI Pore Specification

The pore density (PPI — pores per inch) controls the surface area and the initial attachment of biofilm. Finer PPI gives more surface but a denser structure; coarser PPI gives freer flow. Standard ranges: black 28–60 PPI, white 10–25 PPI. Confirm the PPI against your target biofilm and hydraulic conditions.

Applications

Polyurethane sponge media are used as a biofilm carrier in MBBR / moving-bed processes, in filtration and tertiary treatment, in aquaculture water treatment and in industrial & municipal wastewater treatment — providing a high, stable biomass for efficient organic and nitrogen removal.

Quality & Testing

Products are supported by test reports including polyurethane material and polyurethane sponge inspection reports, and are verified against hydrophilic polyurethane filler test standards. Confirm specific grades, PPI and cube size against your application before ordering.
