Overview

Comet fiber filter media is a deep-bed filtration material in which fiber is bundled into a comet shape: a compact, denser nucleus at one end and a loose fibrous tail at the other. Because the nucleus is the heavier and tighter part of the element, a charged filter bed settles with the nuclei first and the tails last. The result is a single bed whose pore structure changes with depth — fine pores in the nucleus layer, progressively more open channels through the fibrous layer.

This graded structure separates comet fiber media from conventional depth media. Instead of trapping solids in the top few centimetres of the bed, the media holds suspended solids and oil through the full bed depth, which keeps the head loss rise slower and makes the run length between backwashes longer. The material is specified for D-type filters and for duties where filtration and oil removal have to be handled together.

Public industry literature describes comet-shaped fiber media as a high-efficiency water filtration material developed in China and applied in waterworks, industrial water supply, oily wastewater and circulating water systems. The description below follows that general published account.

Structure & Filtration Behaviour

(1) Comet geometry

Each element consists of fiber gathered into a bundle and bound so that one end forms a compact nucleus and the remainder spreads into a soft, loose tail. The fiber is flexible and stays spread out in water, so the tail does not collapse into a mat but keeps the open, fibrous structure that gives the media its dirt-holding capacity.

(2) Homogeneous graded bed

Packed together, the nuclei align into a dense layer and the tails fill a looser layer above and around them. The bed therefore behaves as a homogeneous filter bed with a graded pore distribution rather than a uniformly sized granular bed, so particles of different sizes are captured at different depths.

(3) Depth retention instead of surface cake

Because solids penetrate the bed rather than loading the surface, the media keeps filtration rate and effluent quality stable for longer, and the bed approaches a more even accumulation of solids along its depth — the condition that makes a deep bed both high-rate and reusable.

(4) Backwash

The fibers are free to move in the water, so reverse flow lifts and loosens the bed across its whole depth instead of channeling through it. Captured solids and oil are released quickly, which is the basis of the high-efficiency backwash performance the media is specified for. The backwash cycle that achieves this — rate, duration and whether air scouring is required — follows the D-type filter design and is confirmed with the order.
